Exegesis

The Exegesis section is an attempt by us to enter the inner world of the mantras by decoding them. Here, individual mantras and hymns are approached not merely as linguistic artefacts to be translated, but as carefully structured expressions of a larger vision of reality. A mantra may contain layers of meaning that become visible only when its words, grammatical structures, imagery, deity, ritual setting, and wider textual context are considered together. The purpose of exegesis, therefore, is not simply to provide a meaning but to investigate how that meaning is constructed and what larger conception of existence the mantra may reveal.

This section will explore selected passages from the Vedic corpus through close reading and contextual interpretation. Attention will be given to the Sanskrit text, significant terms, imagery, etymology, grammatical possibilities, ritual contexts, and traditional interpretations. Where appropriate, the readings of major Vedic commentators and modern scholars will be brought into conversation, allowing visitors to encounter the plurality of interpretive traditions surrounding the texts. We are particularly interested in the greater design that emerges when individual mantras are studied in relation to one another. Vedic poetry repeatedly returns to questions of creation, order, sacrifice, speech, knowledge, immortality, cosmic forces, and consciousness. A single hymn may therefore participate in a much larger network of ideas extending across the Vedic corpus and into later Indian thought.
